This article has been written in response to numerous questions from my patients. The most plaintive calls come from the people who have just been shot through with pain. At this moment, most of them (especially men) panic, or are depressed. That’s why timely information might have a positive influence on the recovery process.
I believe, the following pieces of advice will be useful, especially now, at the beginning of fall when summer heat is quickly replaced by cold, windy and damp weather that is a period of increased danger of lumbago.
So, if you have a sharp pain in the low of the back radiating to your leg,
1. Do not panic! That won't help!
2. Ensure your body rest. Lie down on a firm bed preferably on your back straightening your legs little by little. If you are unable to do this right away try turning from side to back some time later, after your organism relaxes and calms down. If you adhere to the regimen of complete rest for your spine the sharp pain may pass in 2-3 days. Your problem disk can restore by itself.
3. Invite a good manual therapist who will help you to dispose of the pain cause. You can use services of an acupuncture therapist who will eliminate pain but not its cause. The first days, any movement of your body can mean not healing of your illness but dragging it out. If possible, invite the above mentioned specialists to your home.
4. Also, you can try to relieve the pain with medication. But remember that all kinds of medicaments have warnings for use; and very often after their intake, exacerbation of other organs chronic diseases take place. You can use painkilling ointments, lotions, balms of natural origin.
5. Anyway, sometimes you will have to get up. Getting up from bed is shown in the Pictures 1-3. Turn to your stomach (1), slowly slip to the bed’s edge, and put your legs on the floor (2). Then stand up holding on to the bed with your hands. Pay attention to your posture before you rise: you stand on your knees (3), your back is straight, you hold on to the bed straightening your legs little by little still holding on to the bed. When your legs are straight let your hands off and draw yourself up. If you do all of this correct you won’t have shootings through your leg any more. You can walk for some time but do not sit down, and go to bed again. You should lie down the same way as you stood up but in reversed order.

4. During the period of a sharp pain you must not:
- Sit, and what is more - go by car. If there is a real necessity to go somewhere you can travel by car in a lying position on the back seat, crawling into the car on all fours or similar to this and then turn to your back;
- Do any physical exercises;
- Heat or massage the sore area;
- Undergo physiotherapy.
5. In the morning before you get up, while lying on your back stretch yourself three times. Each stretching must be accompanied with flexing of all muscles and followed by relaxation. By doing this you will prepare your body relaxed after sleep for getting up.
I sincerely wish you to be healthy!
